Fun South Carolina Facts

South Carolina is a state with a long history of firsts. It was one of the first colonies to be settled among the original 13 by Great Britain, one of the first to declare independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution of 1776, one of the first three former colonies to officially become a state in 1788, and the very first state to secede from the union on December 21, 1860 in the days preceding the Civil War. South Carolina was also the site of the first battle of the Civil War, when state militia fired on Fort Sumter. Today the capital of South Carolina is Columbia and it is rated in the middle of the states in terms of population with 4,255,083 people.
