Fun West Virginia Facts

West Virginia broke away from the state of Virginia in 1863, as it did not agree with the position of the Virginia government in seceding from the Union. Today, West Virginia has the third lowest per capita income in the United States. West Virginia is one of America's leading producers of coal. It has a population of 1,816,856, with its capital located in Charleston. Many of the legal battles which followed West Virginia’s split from the state of Virginia were considered precedent-setting.
